Nana Shake 5 18 2016

Wednesday absolutely rocked. I reunited with Sacha after work and we treated ourselves to a yummy dinner at Lola's Kitchen and then made the trek up Yonge (not foot, by subway) to Nanashake - Toronto's first fully vegan ice cream shop! This is basically the intersection of Sacha and my food loves.

Go bananas for my sweet friend!

Go bananas for my sweet friend!

The staff were so dang nice and let us get behind the counter for a quick picture! A first for I Scream for Ice Cream!

Already family lol

So what makes Nana Shake fully vegan? Everything is (ba)nana based. There's a great selection of flavours from The Original to Strawberry Seduction to Chocolate Mint. Uniquely enough, the "ice cream" is made similar to Yogen Fruz - bars put into a machine to turned into a creamy liquidy texture like ca below! (The cookies are vegan too!)

Boo Yah 5 13 2016

Well, this was indeed the opposite of a freaky Friday the 13th, unless ICE CREAM TACOS (!!) give you the heebiejeebies.

LKM and DE are my St. Clair West buddies and I'm tres tres glad we can go for ice cream after a long week's work.

Cuties!

Cuties!

As we know by now on this blog, Boo Yah Inc. has been deemed the place where I go for ice cream with couples. And it has turned to be a raging success every time.  (Read up on my first visit with Louis and Jason here.)

LKM had a strawberry sweet pocket (fluffy pastry on the outside, ice cream on the in) and it looked like it came out of a fairy princess dream. Even matched her nails perfectly.

DE went for a classic ice cream sandwich and was not disappointed.

Then this happened. This is an ice cream taco and I ate the whole thing.

YEAH BABY!!!!!!!!!!!

YEAH BABY!!!!!!!!!!!

Here's how it went down:
1. Pick THREE flavours if you want - I did (obviously) and ended up picking Peanut Butter and Jelly, Cotton Candy and Birthday Cake.
2. Pick chocolate or caramel sauce to drizzle on top - chocolate for this girl!
3. Pick any additional fixins from fruit loops to chocolate bits and more. I chose sprinkles.
4. INSTAGRAM IT, DANG IT!

Worth noting this was thee messiest experience I've had, minus that one time Matt actually dropped his ice cream scoop on the picnic table. LKM had to cover my lap in napkins after this!

Ice Cream(s): Cotton Candy, Birthday Cake and Peanut Butter and Jelly
Taste: All over the place. Worth talking about the Peanut Butter & Jelly ice cream as there were little chunks of peanut butter and jelly through out which made for real good taste balance. Soooo good and nostalgic of school lunches.
Price: $$$$, but hey - it's a freaking ice cream taco
Bonus(es): Whatever I said about it last time - right in my hood being the best bonus!

La Paloma 4 20 2016

La Paloma is a walk away from my place and well I'm a little bummed it took me this long to get there. On one of the few nights it's been warm this month, Matt and I strolled down St. Clair, walked into La Paloma, sat down and indulged in lotttts of gelato.

A few friends of the area told me of this place last summer. La Paloma is legendary when it comes to flavour offerings. I didn't know before, but La Paloma is legendary. Oodles of flavours - um yeah, over 75! - to choose from and oodles of awards to ooogle over.

#braggingrights

#braggingrights

We were able to sample any flavours. Matt and I were convinced after our first tries. I had cocounut, which, as you can see from below and above, looked and tasted so fluffy. The coconut flakes are always an added bonus for me.

If I'm not mistaken - and hey Matt, if you're out there, correct me if I'm wrong - Matt had a take on Ferrero Rocher.

Yeah baby!

Yeah baby!

Ice Cream: Coconut
Taste: Exactly what you expect
Price: $$$ - worth every penny for the portion size. I mean look, c'mmmonnn!
Bonus(es): Plenty of room to sit and Joseph J. Piccininni Community Centre is right next door!

Summer's Ice Cream 4 15 2016

And we're back! Starting from where I left off last year, there's still a handful of gotta-go-to's. Luckily, I've moved work neighbourhoods and went to check out the Toronto legend Summer's with Matt.

Toronto's Best!

Toronto's Best!

A little hidden (truly - we walked right past the steps to the shop) gem in Yorkville, Summer's has been around for 30+ years serving up fresh, homemade ice cream recipes. The man who served us even gave us a little business history, noting Summer's has been family-run and everything - down to the cones - is made daily!

We were able to try a few/as many samples as we wanted. I forget what Matt settled for, but I went for the Banana Cream. De-freaking-licious. Thick enough in texture and just the right about banananana flavour.

Yummers in the tummers

Sweet as ice cream! <3

Sweet as ice cream! <3

Ice Cream: Banana Cream
Taste: Flavourful and the thicker-than-usual texture was awesome for this choice
Price: $$$
Bonus(es): For saying I have a lil ol' ice cream blog, we got the down low on Summer's family history! It's also available at grocery stores through out the city, which means I could technically have it in my freezer and eat Banana Cream for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Big Gay Ice Cream 12 10 2015

To top of the year, we made it to the Mecca of ice cream. All summer I'd heard about, read about and surely Instagrammed creeped about Big Gay Ice Cream in NYC.

Matt and I toured around Brooklyn and Manhattan and made the trek to this sweet little haven in the West Village.

Both of our choices were sugared 'til you couldn't sugar anymore. I had pumpkin drizzle drizzled all in my cup before the ice cream was even plopped in and Matt had Nutella coated on the inside of his cone.

BGIC has preselected cones and cups and shakes that makes the decision process a little easier. I can't remember what mine was called, but something festive for the Fall/Winter season with lots of pumpkin. Matt's was tasty too.

Happy as clams!

Happy as clams!

And! BGIC has all sorts of swag for sale. Tote bags, t-shirts and even a book on the biz (with a foreword by Anthony Bourdain!!) Just like it was recommended to me oodles of times, I'd tell anyone to go here for breakfast, lunch, dinner or dessert!

Hollywood Gelato 9 9 2015

Matt had a car for a night and asked where to take me on The List that's a little out of the way. I hadn't been to a gelato place yet, so we hit up Hollywood Gelato on Bayview in Leaside.

I had been there years ago in university days with Katie and Carly and knew it would be good. But with the name, would we see a celebrity there too?! High hopes.

Yummmmmmmmmmmm

Yummmmmmmmmmmm

And no celebrities, besides this one. Matt Periscoped us sitting and eating and I'm sure we had a whopping 5 viewers (hey, if you're out there, hi!)

Ferrero Rocher gelato!

Ferrero Rocher gelato!

This was so good. The guy behind the counter said the Ferrero Rocher gelato was a top seller so that's what I went for. The little nut or caramel pieces were scattered in it too, just like the real thing. So good.

Yummmmmsy in the tumsy

Yummmmmsy in the tumsy

If memory serves me right, Matt had the Kinder Surprise gelato which tasted almost like the real thing.

Hollywood gelato is a perfect place in the summer if you're in the area. They have a front patio and plenty of seating inside. The reason we came to this one in particular too was because it was open later than most.

Greg's Ice Cream 9 27 2015

Well there's no picture evidence for this one, but I met Matt at Greg's Ice Cream before we watched what was or wasn't the Lunar Eclipse.

The pumpkin ice cream I had was really good. Matt might've had Toasted Marshmallow and might've let me try some too. Also worth it. The portions were massive and the pricing was normal.

There was lots of wall art from customers and a good joke on one that I later took credit for... oops.

I'll make a pit stop to Greg's the next time I'm in the Annex for a photo opp!

And since there aren't any photos, make sure to click on the hyperlink above and test out the Happiness Randomizer on the main page.

I got "Take a long nap without setting an alarm." That's one thing I'm all too familiar with.

Ice Cream: Pumpkin Pie
Taste: Flavourful with all of the spices. Leaves a good taste in your mouth and feels good going down cool
Price: $$$
Bonus(es): Great customer service. I remember the guy behind the counter laughing at our jokes. And a good story behind the business - very Ben & Jerry's-esque when it comes to CSR

The Red Bench 9 26 2015

Jordan and I had these awesome plans to go see some movie one night. The movie was sold out. It sucked. So we dragged our booties over to The Red Bench for some icey cream creams and a nice little sit on a coloured bench.

View from the aforementioned Red Bench

View from the aforementioned Red Bench

I remember this place smelling sooo dang good from the cookies. I think Red Bench is the first place that offered toppings for their sammies too - extra yum! Anything from candy to fruit to more chocolate.

Mint ice cream sammie with milk chocolate bits!

Mint ice cream sammie with milk chocolate bits!

As for the actual sammie, the ice cream could've filled out the cookie more than it did, but that's okay! Tastes still rocked and it was just what we needed that night.

Ice Cream: Mint Chocolate Chip
Taste: I love a great mix of chocolate and mint. This one felt and tasted so fresh and sweet in my mouth.
Price: $$$
Bonus(es): The bench, obviously

Sweet Jesus 9 14 2015 & 9 18 2015

Thank sweet goodness Sweet Jesus is close enough to my office. My work-friend-quickly-turned-out-of-work-friend Laura and I went to SJ twice in a week!

The first outing I got a Pimped Out Cone with some graham cracker and maybe coconut shavings on it? I forget the ice cream flavour but it was damn good. Sweet Jesus' ice cream is more icey than creamy which was a nice change from the other shops.

Lunch break!

Lunch break!

This place was so good we ended up coming back for lunch on my birthday. Below is Sweet Jesus' take on Krusty the Clown. No joke. Pretty close if you ask me! That's cotton candy on the sides.

Sweet Jesus!

Sweet Jesus!

Sweet Jesus isn't all just about pimping out ice cream.

They do wild tastes on other desserts like paletas and churros.

They do crazy things with coffee. Check out their Instagram to see what I mean. So, so tasty.

Taste: More icey than creamy, just the right amount of sweet
Price: $6 for a Pimped Out Cone
Bonus: The coffee and the chance to be featured on their Instagram account - yahooo!

The Big Chill 8 23 2015

The only way to properly chill is to chill at The Big Chill. And Matt and I did at a little kiddy picnic table, with ice cream cones in hand.

Mint something and Tiger Tail

And an ice cream kiss!

And an ice cream kiss!

All of the ice cream comes with whipped cream and a little mini Oreo on top. Yesssss!

Ice Cream: Tiger Tail
Taste: Classic and perfect for my favourite kind of ice cream!
Price: $$.5
Bonus(es): Bright neon lights!
